Fishing Report

Devils Lake has grown from 40,000 acres lake to nearly 135,000 acres. It has risen over 26 feet in elevation reaching its peak elevation in July 2001.

Devils Lake Icing Perch Devils Lake is made up of five separate basins or bays varying in depth and size. Each bay is connected by bridges and culverts. Since the lake is still rising, access is limited due to the inability to construct enough permanent docks and harbors. You can fish the famous Minnewaukan Flats or the West Bay near the city of Minnewaukan. This area in 1993 was pasture and hayfields. It is located 20 miles west of the city of Devils Lake. It's fertile and it grows big fish fast.

In 2002 an area called Pelican Lake will be accessible from larger boats for the first time ever due to the construction of a new bridge over the Mauves Coulee, a major watershed contributor for the lake. This will be a hot spot for spring pike and walleye.

Kevin believes in practicing Selective Harvest were you keep the smaller more numerous better tasting fish and release the larger more fertile fish to also enjoy another day.

Some one once asked him, “How do you catch an 8 pound walleye?”
His response was “First you must release a 4 pounder.”

State Record White Bass
While fishing with Kevin in 2000, his nephew, Jordan of Albert Lea, Minnesota, caught the North Dakota state record White bass.

They were trolling Shad Raps along Highway 281 north of Minnewaukan when he hooked the biggest White Bass they had ever seen. They always release White Bass, but decided that this one should go on the wall.

They didn’t realize they had caught the record fish until it was looked up at home. Luckily they weighed her at the Grahams Island Bait Shop on the way home.

It measured just under 19 inches and weighed 4.5 lbs.
